Oscars: 5 Good moments, 5 Awful moments
So, like much of the world, I stayed up and watched the Oscars to the bitter end. In my Oscar pool, I ended up second, with my partner beating me (with my own knowledge, no less!!) by 4 points. That’s what I get for taking the emotional route and going for someone other than Sandy Bullock, the only category where I didn’t choose the predictable winner. I have to say I enjoyed this broadcast far less than last year’s. Something about it felt a bit too stinted, a bit too slow, too muddied, and dull. Last year’s had its issues, but it still felt like a step forward. Between the massive musical numbers that did nothing (despite my unaffected love of the NPH) and the awkward scripted banter, I found a lot to be underwhelmed by.
5 Good moments:
I predict these will be the same as many other blogs’ best:
- Ben Stiller’s awkwardness and James Cameron’s delightfully awkward attempt to try to take it in good humour and failing, despite the fact that the gag itself was in perfectly good taste
- Sandy Bullock’s speech
- Geoffrey Fletcher’s win
- Tina Fey and RDJ, count me in on the train of supporters for a Fey/RDJ hosting stint next year!
- Bigelow’s win
5 Terrible moments:
- Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin’s Opening monologue. Just so long and drawn out. Somewhat redeemed by the Paranormal activity gag later, but not really.
- The dance sequence, which the producers apparently decided was more important than allowing winners to speak, and more important than allowing good musicians their moment to shine
- Sarah Jessica Parker’s unnatural hue
- The now infamous awkward moment that will be projected everywhere as “White Woman ‘Kanye’s Black Man!”, where neither winner will ever look at back at their winning moment as a true happy moment
- Turning off the mic – not cool. They may be awkward rambling speeches, but the second winner at least gets to be heard!
