Favourite movies of 2009 season

But really, ISN’T pop a genre?

So I was registering the old CD for sales tracking today, and had a bit of difficulty in the “Genre” box, in that the only two that remotely seem to fit the album were “Soul/R&B” and “Rock”, neither of which it really is.  Certainly, the upcoming CD is hardly “R&B” OR “Rock”.  

Contacting the individuals to confirm that there was no category for “Pop” because “Pop is short for Popular music”, I was told “if you have no genre, leave it blank.”  which made me somewhat sad for my songs! They are orphaned, genre-less songs! Alone in the world! What are they to do, other than be grabbed by a man in a ridiculous hat and walked down through London as he tries to sell them while singing “One Song For Sale” all because they asked for another bowl of porridge which they didn’t really even want but were encouraged to ask for by their stupid peers at the orphanage?

Songs of the Decade I wish I had written

Mariah Carey – We Belong Together
(Mariah Carey, Jermaine Dupri, Manuel Seal, Johnta Austin, Babyface, Darren Bristol, Sid Johnson, Bobby Womack, Patrick Moten, Sandra Sully) <– ridiculous number of writers due to Babyface/Womack references.

There’s a reason this went down as the Song of the Decade on various lists and got the Grammies to overcome their distate for Mimi.  It’s just one of the most solid, audible, catchy, throwback, and timeless songs she’s ever written.  There’s no denying I have a now-13 year long affection for the MC, but while I love her persona AND her songwriting/production/vocal chops, I haven’t always agreed with her melodic arrangement choices.

This particular live performance is great, not just for the editing, but also because of the additional instrumentation that was added during this time period when she was performing the song.  The extra synth pads really thicken out the song.   Continue reading
